San Diego Miramar College
Situated in San Diego, California, the San Diego Miramar College is a public community college that is part of the San Diego Community College District. It was founded in 1969, originally as a training institution for law enforcement personnel and firefighters. Currently, San Diego Miramar College has around 12,500 undergraduate students enrolled, and an academic staff of less than 450. The college is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
San Diego Miramar College offers Associate of Art, Associate in Science, and Certificate programs in various areas of study. Programs offered include Art, Automotive Technology, Aviation Operations, Business Management, Chemistry, Child Development, Communications Studies, Diesel Technology, Exercise Science, Fire Protection Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Music, Physical Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences, World Language Studies, and many more.
Along with the other California Community Colleges, San Diego Miramar College participates in the Basic Skills Initiative. This program aims to make sure that students have the tools and access to services, programs, and classes towards achieving their academic goals. In particular, the Basic Skills Initiative focuses in pre-collegiate Math and English skill development for students.
International students are welcomed and accepted at San Diego Miramar College (nonimmigrant F-1 visa required). While the College does provide assistance with various requirements and the acceptance process, the institution does not currently offer an intensive English as a Second Language program.
Students at San Diego Miramar College who are currently on CalWorks with the County Health and Human Services Agency are also entitled to receive various benefits and services from CalWorks on campus, including vocational counseling, county verification of welfare-to-work activities, childcare assistance and referrals, tutorial services, workshops for Life and Career, job placement opportunities, and many more.
The Counseling Center at San Diego Miramar College provides personal, career, and academic counseling to enrolled students. Both walk-in and scheduled appointments are available to students. In addition to confidential one-on-one counseling sessions, the Counseling Center also offers workshops and classes suited to diverse needs of students. Also, online counseling services are offered.
A state-of-the-art Fitness Center is on the campus of San Diego Miramar College and available for students who want to maintain their physical fitness. The Fitness Center is equipped with elliptical trainers, recumbent bicycles, treadmills, upright bikes, strength training equipment, and more. Classes for aerobics and core conditions, as well as other fitness programs, are offered at the Center as well. Classes and programs are offered at very reasonable and affordable rates to students.
Many students of San Diego Miramar College go on to transfer their credits and continue at a four-year college or university. The Transfer Center on campus focuses on making sure that students are guided through the process and equipped with the right resources. The Transfer Center offers transfer fairs, workshops, meet-ups with college representatives, campus tours, software, college publications, and other helpful resources to assist students in making the right decisions regarding their transfer. Friendly, experienced staff and counselors are also on hand to help students.
